Back for a second round after last year’s wildly successful local production of “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind,” the Chicago-based Neo-Futurist theater company will conduct a residency for the UWMC Theater Department that culminates in a student performance of their own plays written in the “neo-futurist” aesthetic. The Neo-Futurists have grown to become one of the most highly regarded experimental theater companies in America. Their work, a fusion of sport, contemporary issues, and poetry has been likened to a “living-newspaper” and is devoted to interactive impermanence, the honesty of the moment, and an interweaving of chance and change. For the 2011 Wausau production, UWMC students will create two-minute sketches drawn from their own lives and experiences and attempt to present 30 of them in 60 minutes.
Called “puckish and irreverent” by the Washington Post, the troupe “pranks” the audience with its unpredictable menu to create a “pell-mell party game” that “leaves you breathless with their audacity and wit.”
