Minutes of the Meeting of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

held on April 13, 2001 in the Physics Lab

The meeting commenced at 1:10 p.m.

Present: Case, Fox, Gonzalez, Hemenway, Koupelis, Maheswaran (Chair), Martin, Montgomery, Stremlau, Whitaker.

1. Elections

Results of the annual elections to divisionally represented committees on campus were as follows:

Appointments Committee: Paul Whitaker -- for the two-year period 2001-2003

Curriculum Committee: Theo Koupelis -- for the two-year period 2001-2003

Evaluation Committee: Frank Gonzalez -- for the two-year period 2001-2003

Promotion and Tenure Committee: Joel Case -- for the two-year period 2001-2003

Research and Professional Development Committee: Ned Grossnickle – for the academic year 2001-2002

2. Other Business

(a) Evaluations

There was a brief discussion on whether annual merit evaluations should be conducted by the departments only. The opinions          expressed were varied. The results of a straw vote were as follows:

Number in favor of evaluations by departments only every year = 5

Number in favor of evaluations by departments every year with input from campus = 1

Number in favor of the present system of evaluation by department and campus in alternate years = 4
