2.  Report on status of science facilities renovations

Whitaker reported that proposals for the $10,000 South Hall planning study are due on 4/28, with interviews to be held with the top 3 firms as soon thereafter as possible.  The study will need to be completed by June 17, so that the County Planning Commission can respond to the study as it plans projects for 2006.  Whitaker will be participating in the interviews, but Jim Koch and Jim Veninga asked the division to select one additional divisional representative to participate in the selection process.  After brief discussion, Sargent was nominated and elected.

3.  Report on federal grant for equipment and furnishings

Whitaker reported that the so-called AObey money@ was allocated for our use, but has not yet been officially awarded.  Jim Koch requested a 12-month implementation period beginning June 1.  He will keep us informed on the status of the grant.  If and when it is awarded, he suggested that each department be given a dedicated procurement card to simplify the bookkeeping associated with grant purchases.  We will be able to purchase some items directly, but some of the larger items will require the issuing of formal purchase orders.

4.  Divisional representation to Steering and Appeals & Grievance

Whitaker reported that the other two divisions had no support for electing members of Steering by divisional elections and very little support for selecting members of Appeals and grievance by division.  After discussion, the following resolution was passed, unanimously:

ABe it resolved that the Division of Natural Sciences requests the UWMC Steering  Committee to add discussion of divisional elections to select members of the Steering Committee and the Appeals and Grievance Committees to the agenda for the May 3 Collegium meeting.

5.  Recommendations for Budget Committee

Whitaker and Martin mentioned that the Budget Committee would be meeting on April 27 to make recommendations for one-time projects to fund with remaining funds from the $20,000 special allocation and Winterim 2005 revenues.  Whitaker was asked to propose the Budget issue a special call to the campus for proposals.  As it turned out, Jim Koch argued correctly that the memo he circulated in Fall 2004 stated that one-time requests should be included and explained in the budget.  The Budget Committee made its recommendations based on unmet needs in the budget requests it had already received.

Adjournment B Meeting adjourned at 4:55 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Paul Whitaker,

Chair, UWMC Division of Natural Sciences
