I. Select Mission of the University of Wisconsin Marathon County
The University of Wisconsin Marathon County has been established as a center of learning, scholarship, creative arts, and cultural activity for students, faculty, staff and the community. In addition to the missions of the University of Wisconsin System and the University of Wisconsin Colleges, UW Marathon County has the following select mission:The University of Wisconsin - Marathon County offers freshman-sophomore education in the liberal arts and preprofessional fields. The faculty and staff maintain a high level of research and other professional activity and form an important regional resource for economic and social development, as well as cultural enrichment.
As a gateway to higher education, the University of Wisconsin - Marathon County serves the residents of Wausau, Marathon County, and, through its residence hall, all of north central Wisconsin.
With historical ties to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin - Marathon County continues a tradition of high standards for students, faculty, and staff. Its commitment to teaching, dedication to the pursuit of knowledge, and encouragement of creative work, together with its small size and community base, ensure a supportive and stimulating academic community.
II. Goals
To carry out its select mission, the University of Wisconsin - Marathon County (UWMC) commits itself to the following goals:To go back to Contents click HERE.A. To offer a challenging and rewarding freshman-sophomore educational experience. B. To make UWMC's strengths, advantages, and expectations well known in the community, promoting the enrollment of well-prepared and highly motivated students. C. To orient students so that they value the opportunities and accept the responsibilities of a university education. D. To create a community characterized by consistently high involvement in student life beyond the classroom and united by a collegiate culture where initiative and interaction are predominant. E. To recruit and retain faculty and staff committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, and to generously support their continuing professional development. F. To build a coherent and meaningful liberal arts curriculum, involving faculty, staff and students actively in its planning and realization. G. To ensure and monitor the cumulative development of critical thinking and communication skills. H. To promote diversity in students, faculty, and staff, and to support a curriculum which displays international and minority perspectives. I. To build a university community based on mutual respect and committed to the free and open discussion of ideas, both inside and outside the classroom. J. To promote effective and innovative teaching through institutional support and faculty interaction. K. To provide the advising, counseling, and academic support services necessary for students to derive the maximum benefit from their university education. L. To provide, equip, and maintain a facility which meets the needs of the university community for individual development and productive interaction. M. To develop the financial assets which will improve facilities, provide more opportunities for professional development, and support scholarships. N. To serve citizen needs and develop the human resources of the region through UW-Extension programming, interinstitutional relationships and other outreach efforts. O. To sustain and further develop ties with the community, as in the UWMC Foundation and Area Advisory Board activities, and to involve alumni in this community support network. P. To pursue an ongoing campus and university planning process, which coordinates the desired directions for the institution. Q. To address the whole student, inviting her or him into full participation in the campus community: through curricular and co-curricular offerings to provide opportunities for intellectual growth, cultural understanding, social development, career success, and personal fulfillment.
