ART 141

Objectives: The purpose of this class is to learn the processes and techniques of artistic printing based on a change in the depth of the printing plate. This is a basic class which assumes little or no experience with printing, but some design or drawing experience will be very helpful. To accomplish our goals we will rely primarily on visual exercises and assignments. These will be conceived and designed by you within a specified technical framework. Following are some of the topics we will explore.

   RELIEF - Wood - Xylography - prints the raised areas
        block cutting   texture
        registration    proofing - printing
        multiple blocks color printing
   INTAGLIO - Etching & Engraving - usually metal, (we'll use zinc) - prints the depressions
        hard ground etching     engraving - drypoint
        aquatint        softground
        sugar lift      white ground
        proofing - printing     color printing

ART 243 & 247

Objectives: The purpose of this class is to further explore the processes and techniques of artistic printing based on either intaglio or relief methods. This is an intermediate class which requires prior experience with printing. This class is for the self-motivated. You will be expected to choose your own areas of exploration and concepts. There will be demonstrations of the following if appropriate.

   RELIEF
        multiple registration - multiple blocks         jig saw blocks
        4 - color printing w/ process color             large editions
   INTAGLIO
        multiple registration - multiple blocks         salt grain etching
        4 - color printing w/ process color             viscosity printing

REQUIREMENTS

GRADING
Your grade will primarily be based on your concepts and technical execution. The final grade will also include attendance, critique involvement and participation in the shop functions, e.g. clean-up and proper handling of tools and equipment.
