Objectives: This is a materials based class which introduces and explores a variety of common sculptural components and processes. We will study all applicable methods for working with Wood, Styrene, Plaster or Concrete, and Metal. The four primary construction techniques used in sculpture are: Fabrication (Addition), Carving (subtraction), Modeling and Casting. Most of our work will concentrate on Fabrication and Carving although you will have the opportunity to work in each of the four methods.
Objectives: This class will help you to familiarize yourself with the work of contemporary sculptors and current sculptural concepts. It is more independently based and you are encouraged to research and further develop your own ideas within a loosely structured framework.
Objectives: This class is for the self-motivated. As with the other sculpture classes, I expect mucho worko. You will usually be expected to choose your own materials and concepts with individual guidance as needed.
Your grade will primarily be based on your concepts, implementation and technical execution. The final grade will also include attendance, critique involvement and participation in the shop functions, e.g. clean-up and proper handling of tools and equipment.
There are many possible materials which may be used in sculpture. Among them: Wood: lumber, logs, plywood, etc. We don't usually supply wood.
Check out the holdings in the UWMC library.
I have the following magazines you may read here. Sculpture, Maquette, Glass and Contemporanea. They are located by my studio door.
There is a book of sculpture exhibition postcards located on the bottom shelf of the slanted library cart near my studio door. They are primarily from New York galleries.
